Julia Garner’s Low-Budget Horror Movie Beats The Fantastic Four, Freakier Friday On Opening Weekend

Weapons Wordwide Box Office Collection: Zach Cregger’s chilling horror movie Weapons is ruling the box office. Starring Julia Garner in lead role the movie was released in theatres worldwide on 8th August 2025. Weapons movie has received significant praise from fans and critics for its gripping storyline and strong screen performances. The low budget horror movie has already surpassed The Fantastic Four and Freakier Friday on its opening weekend at the box office.

Weapons earned an impressive $42.5 million domestically (US and Canada) during its opening weekend, easily securing the number one spot. It outperformed Lindsay Lohan’s Freakier Friday, which collected $29 million in the same region over the weekend. Weapons has made a strong global start as it took in $28 million internationally during its debut weekend, pushing its worldwide total to $70 million. This made it the top-grossing film across the globe for the weekend, surpassing not only Freakier Friday but also Marvel’s big release The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which earned between $30–35 million overseas.

Meanwhile, what makes Weapons’ success even more impressive is its modest production budget of just $38 million. By the end of its first weekend, it had already covered its costs and entered profit territory, which is a rare feat in modern cinema. Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore, told AP that both Weapons and Freakier Friday benefitted from clever viral marketing and strong social media buzz. “The top two films could not be more different, and that’s what makes this weekend so appealing for moviegoers,” he said. “Both are perfectly tailored for their audiences to react in real time and then share online.”

On the other hand, weapons currently holds a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising its unsettling atmosphere and unique approach to horror. Its success adds to a remarkable run for the genre in 2025, with only Final Destination: Bloodlines and Sinners opening higher this year. With a gripping story, strong word-of-mouth, and a worldwide audience, Weapons has proven that horror is still one of the most bankable genres in global cinema.
