They’re set to launch three SUVs by the end of 2027 a plug-in hybrid, mid-size EV and compact EV.
JSW Motors’ Plans In India
JSW Motors will officially start selling their cars in India on December 4th 2026 with their first production SUV the Combat. It will be based on products they’ve developed with Chery Automobiles with local assembly.
They’re set to launch one plug-in hybrid and two battery electric SUVs. Although JSW have not officially confirmed when these will be launched, it is reported that the Combat will be the first to come, then the J5 in early 2027 and finally the V23 in the latter half of 2027.
It’s important to note that they’re not restricting themselves to EVs. Offering both PHEV and EV will give buyers the option to get a low running cost vehicle without relying on charging infrastructure.
JSW Combat
The Combat will be the first SUV to launch. It will be based on the Jetour T2 with a rebadged spec. This large, rugged looking D-segment SUV will take on the big players in the premium SUV segment with a plug-in hybrid powertrain.
Reports suggest it will come with a 1.5 litre turbocharged petrol engine and twin electric motors. It’ll produce around 355-360hp with up to 610Nm of torque. It’ll also come with an 18.4kWh LFP battery that will give it an electric range of around 90-100km.
Although it will be front-wheel drive, the Combat will come with a powerful hybrid powertrain and big size. This means it will likely be aimed at buyers who want a feature rich SUV with a long range. It’ll likely cost between ₹30-50Lhs competing with the likes of the Toyota Fortuner, MG Majestor and other large hybrid and premium SUVs.
If JSW price it towards the lower end of the range it could be an interesting SUV for those who want the presence of an SUV, hybrid efficiency and strong performance.
JSW J5
The second model will likely be the JSW J5. It will be based on Chery’s Jaecoo J5. The global version comes with a petrol, hybrid and electric option however the Indian version will likely be an electric only vehicle.
It’ll be around 4.38m long, 1.65m wide and 1.86m high with a wheelbase of around 2.62m. This makes it a mid-size electric SUV and will compete with the likes of the Hyundai Creta Electric, Mahindra BE 6 and Tata Sierra EV.
It’ll come with one front mounted electric motor producing around 208hp and 288Nm of torque. It’ll have a large 60.93kWh LFP battery that should give a range of nearly 500km — a great range for both urban and motorway driving.
The J5 will be launching in January 2027 and is likely to cost between ₹20-25Lhs. This would make it a premium electric SUV.
JSW V23
Finally, the third SUV will be based on Chery’s iCar V23. It has a unique retro boxy design so will have a lifestyle appeal. It’ll be smaller than the J5 but could have a spacious interior thanks to its upright design.
The iCar V23 globally comes with both single motor RWD and dual motor AWD variants. JSW have not confirmed which variant will be coming to India but the Indian version is expected in the latter half of 2027.
It’ll be around 4.22m long, 1.92m wide, 1.84m high and have a wheelbase of around 2.73m. It’ll cost between ₹17-25Lhs. Reports suggest it will be priced under ₹20Lhs to have local assembly.
This could be a direct competitor to the Tata Sierra EV and other stylish EVs. It’ll have a boxy design, wide stance and potentially competitive pricing meaning it could stand out in a market where most EVs have a traditional crossover look.
Local Assembly Investment
JSW MG Motor India are heavily investing in local assembly to push this product offensive forward. They’ve invested ₹1400 crore in FY27 as part of a larger ₹3,000-4,000 crore capex.
This will allow them to develop new products, grow their manufacturing and increase local assembly. They’re aiming for 70% localisation across their future products which will help keep prices competitive despite importing key technology.
They’re also increasing their production capacity per year to 160,000 units by the end of FY27. This will be very important if they want to get their new SUVs up and running quickly.
What It Means For Buyers
JSW Motors could bring more choice to the booming electrified SUV market in India. The Combat will appeal to buyers who want a large plug-in hybrid with strong performance. The J5 and V23 will target the growing EV SUV market.
The key factor for buyers will be how much they’ll cost, how many dealerships they’ll have and what the real world range will be. JSW will need to show they can offer a reliable ownership experience with great after-sales and competitive running costs compared to big players like Tata, Mahindra, Hyundai and MG.
Overall it’s an ambitious plan. JSW Motors could quickly become a serious new entrant into the Indian market with 3 electrified SUVs by 2027 as the country moves to hybrids and electric vehicles.
