Joe Root Creates History, Matches Don Bradman; Becomes First Player In World To Complete Huge Feat

Joe Root etched his name in the history books by setting another world record despite a rare failure with the bat during the first innings of the 5th Test between England and India in the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at the Oval Cricket Ground in Birmingham.

Root made 29 runs before he was trapped on the pads in front of the stumps by Mohammed Siraj as England managed to take a slender lead against the visitors, on a spicy track with pacers enjoying their time after a long tail throughout the series.

Overall, Root is only the second player in history, after Don Bradman to score over 2000 runs against a single opposition at home. The 34-year-old has also became the first player to manage the feat on English soil and for the English team.

With his century in the fourth Test at Manchester, Root broke Bradman’s record for the most centuries against an opponent at home (9). He also has the third-most 50+ scores against one team at home having crossed the milestone 15 times against India, which is the highest against them too.

Through the course of his knock at Oval, Root also went past Sachin Tendulkar’s (7216 runs in India) to climb to second place in the list of players with most runs at home in Test cricket. Root has 7224 runs in 84 matches on English soil. Only Ricky Ponting (7578 runs in Australia) has more runs in their home country. Root (23 in Engalnd) also the joint-most tons in Test cricket history at home.
