Joe Root continued his incredible run of form across formats on Sunday (September 7) and broke a world record he shared with Virat Kohli and David Warner as England bounced back after losing the series to seal a consolation win in the third ODI against South Africa at the Rose Bowl in Southampton by a world record margin of 342 runs.r Root was the star of the show with a knock of 100 in 96 balls, which included six boundaries.

He put up a 182-run partnership for the third wicket with fellow centurion Jacob Bethell. The 21-year-old made his maiden ton of his international career.

Joe Root Creates History

In his final international game of the year at home, he features in England’s T20I season. The star batter completed 1000 runs on home soil in the 2025 season. The 34-year-old was at his best in both Test and ODI cricket.

This is the fifth time in his career that Root has scored over 1000 runs in a home season, having previously done so in 2014, 2016, 207, 2019, and 2025. The ex-English skipper ended the year with 1013 runs in 16 innings with five centuries at an average of 72.35.

Root played six Tests in this period, which included five in the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, in which he scored 571 runs with three tons. Meanwhile, he made 442 runs in six ODIs, which two tons, one against West Indies and South Africa each.

Root is the first player in history fo across the world to have five home seasons over 1000 in his career. Over the years, there have been 74 instances of players making 1000 runs at home in a single season with 14 players doing it multiple times. Root is one of three players to it four or more times while five have achieved it on three occasions.
