Story of Jemutavahana

According to mythology, there was a king named Jimutavahana who was very kind and philanthropic. He decided to renounce his Rajpat and do penance in the forest. Once visiting, he saw that an old woman of Nagvansh was mourning. On asking, she told that she is going to sacrifice her only son to Garuda, because Garuda got the boon that he can devour a snake every day.

Seeing the grief of that mother, Jemutavahana presented himself in place of her son. When Garuda came to eat them, Jemutavahana told him the reason for his sacrifice. Garuda was pleased with the courage and philanthropy of Jimutavahana and he gave the serpents a boon not to eat. In this way, Jemutavahana protected a mother’s son. Since then, mothers worship Jemutavahana to protect their children.

Story of eagle and jackal

According to another popular legend, a eagle and a jackal lived in a forest. Together, both of them decided to observe Jitiya fast. But on the day of fasting, Siyarin could not tolerate hunger and ate the food secretly, while the eagle observed Nirjala fast with full devotion.

When the two were reborn in the next life, the eagle was born as a queen and she got the pleasure of many sons. At the same time, Siyarin was born in a poor family and all his sons died at a young age. Through this story, there is a message that the fast should be followed with full devotion and reverence.
