This fast is mainly observed with great enthusiasm in states like Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. In this fast, women observe Nirjala fast for the long life and happy life of their children. The celebration of Jitiya Vrat is celebrated in Bihar for 3 days, which is considered one of the most difficult fast. There are many traditions and beliefs related to Jitiya Vrat, one of which is to wear a red or yellow thread in it.
Why do Jiutia wears thread?
The thread worn in Jitiya Vrat is called Jiutia Mala or Jiutia locket. This locket is considered to be of special importance in this fast. It is believed that this fast is not complete without wearing this garland. It is a red or yellow thread, in which gold or silver lockets or lumps are tied. The number of lockets is according to the number of children and an additional locket or lump is added for auspiciousness. Some lockets also have the shape of Lord Jemutavahana.
Importance of locket in Jitiya Vrat
This garland or thread is worn in Jitiya fast, because it is a symbol of the child’s longevity, safety and good health. It also shows the dedication of mother’s faith and motherhood. Fasting is considered incomplete without jiutia, because without it, fasting does not have the desired effect and the fast remains incomplete.
Longevity of children:- This thread and locket are considered a symbol of avoiding the long life of children and the crises in their lives.
Symbol of resolution:- It is not just an ornament, but is also considered a symbol of the resolution made for the mother’s faith and children.
Fasting perfection:- It is believed that Jitiya fast without Jiutia thread and locket is considered incomplete. Also, without it, the fruit of fast is not obtained.
