The thread worn in Jitiya Vrat is called Jiutia Mala or Jiutia locket. This locket is considered to be of special importance in this fast. It is believed that this fast is not complete without wearing this garland. It is a red or yellow thread, in which gold or silver lockets or lumps are tied. The number of lockets is according to the number of children and an additional locket or lump is added for auspiciousness. Some lockets also have the shape of Lord Jemutavahana.
