New Delhi: Sonakshi Sinha’s big Telugu debut, Jatadhara, brings supernatural thrills and mythological mystery, but its box office start surprised many with low numbers. Despite being hyped as a visual spectacle, the film’s first-day earnings barely crossed Rs 20 lakh, raising questions about its journey ahead.
Will strong reviews and word of mouth turn things around for this spooky tale? Dig inside to know the full story behind Jatadhara’s opening, its plot twists, and what makes it stand out in Indian horror cinema.
Jatadhara box office collection Day 1
Sonakshi Sinha and Sudheer Babu’s supernatural thriller Jatadhara opened in cinemas this week, blending Indian mythology with elements of modern horror. The film, set against the divine backdrop of the Anantha Padmanabha Swamy Temple, explores the tension between science, faith, and mysticism. Audiences witnessed an ambitious cinematic experience with bold storytelling and rich mythological references, but the excitement didn’t translate into big box office numbers.
According to early estimates from Sacnilk, Jatadhara earned around Rs 0.95 crore on its opening day. On its second day, the film has earned Rs 0.09 crore till 12 PM. This is much lower than recent releases in the same genre, such as Thamma, which opened to a massive Rs 18.8 crore. Trade experts were taken aback by the contrast, especially given the film’s visual scale and advance buzz.
Critics, though, had good things to say about Jatadhara. Many praised its “visual ambition and bold storytelling,” while noting that the film tries “to bridge folklore and contemporary cinema”. The screenplay, written and directed by Venkat Kalya and Abhishek Jaiswa, revolves around Shiv (played by Sudheer Babu), a sceptical ghost hunter troubled by recurring dreams of a child being killed by a woman. His journey takes a shocking turn when he discovers a mysterious picture in his home, leading to deep secrets about his own past.
About Jatadhara
Sonakshi Sinha steps into the role of Dhan Pishachini, a mythological demoness said to guard hidden wealth. Shiv’s search forces him into an intense showdown between fate, belief, and the supernatural. The film’s mythological backbone and modern horror format set it apart from routine genre movies.
Jatadhara also features Shilpa Shirodkar and Divya Khosla in key roles. Produced under the SKG Entertainment banner and presented by Zee Studios, the film marks Sonakshi’s Telugu debut. Shot simultaneously in Telugu and Hindi, it attempts to reach audiences across languages.
Trade analysts believe that “positive word of mouth may improve box office performance over the weekend”. Despite its slow start, fans are hopeful that curiosity and reviews will help Jatadhara gain momentum in the coming days.
