Jason Roy looked in sublime form while batting for Glasgow Cosmic at Sportpark Westvliet in Voorburg and played an explosive and vintage knock.
During the 15th over he had already scored 60 runs off just 37 balls including eight boundaries and a six. After playing such a terrific knock, he was out in a bizarre fashion which has now gone viral on social media. Matt Hollard bowled a short and wide delivery outside off and Roy stepped across and tried to scoop it fine. The timing was excellent and it hit the middle of the but the ball was deflected straight back into the stumps. Bails flew. Roy stood for a second in disbelief and then had a wry smile before he walked off.
The European T20 Premier League’s official account posted it with the caption: ‘a perfect timed shot that simply got Jason Roy out.’ It was a bizarre dismissal that fans and even the players found funny. Despite that dismissal the former England batter looked in great touch as he smashed 60 and gave Cosmic the platform they needed after early wickets. When he left, the score was at 144 for four and his knock helped the team post a big total. Glasgow went on to win the match and one of the highlights of his knock was that he took Ashwin to the cleaners and set the tone for the match.
Ravichandran Ashwin’s Dublin Guardians suffer another defeat in ETPL
Dublin Guardians won the toss and chose to bowl first in Voorburg. Glasgow Cosmic had a tough start as they lost their captain George Munsey and Liam Livingstone early. Jason Roy and Richie Berrington took control and put on a 68-run stand to help them recover. Berrington smashed 51 off only 27 balls with four sixes while Matthew Cross finished unbeaten on 25 as Glasgow Cosmic finished on 183 for five. Jason Roy was the top run scorer and his fifty had given them a very good total in the first innings. Ravi Ashwin picked up a wicket but was very expensive.
Dublin kept losing wickets in the chase. Harry Tector fought hard for 75 and played brilliantly but wickets kept falling around him. Lungi Ngidi was the pick of the bowlers finishing with four for 21. Paul van Meekeren also picked up three wickets and Ali Khan two as the Guardians were bowled out for 150 in 19.3 overs. Berrington won the player of the match award. Glasgow Cosmic bounced back strongly after opening loss with a 33-run win, and got a crucial two points and breathing life into their campaign. Dublin are still searching for a first victory and have had a tough start to the season.
