Punjabi singer Jasbir Jassi, known for hit songs such as Dil Le Gayee and Koka, has taken an apparent indirect dig at people making promises about Punjab, saying the state should be allowed to retain its own identity.
Jassi shared his views in an Instagram post, questioning the growing number of people he described as outsiders who, according to him, were arriving in Punjab with different messages and assurances.
Alongside photographs of himself, the singer listed several promises, including preventing religious conversions, improving Punjab’s condition, eliminating drug abuse, making the state Rangla Punjab and transforming it into Paris.
“Bahar waaale saaare Punjab nu samjhaun aa gye aa,” he wrote, suggesting that people from outside Punjab had come to tell its residents what should be done.
He then made his point more directly, writing, “Yaar Punjab nu Punjab rehan do. Apna kamm karo jaake. Tuanu koi problem hoyee taan dassyo.”
The statement, which translates to “Just let Punjab remain Punjab. Go and do your own work. If you face any problem, let us know,” appeared to be a response to the various promises being made about the state.
Recently, Jassi also expressed gratitude to veteran actress Neena Gupta for visiting a rehearsal session and encouraging Punjab’s performing artists. Sharing a video on Instagram, he thanked her for taking time to meet the performers and said her presence had boosted their morale ahead of an upcoming performance.
Jassi has been a prominent name in the Punjabi music industry, with popular tracks including Dil Le Gayee, Kudi Kudi and Laung Da Lashkara. He has also contributed to Bollywood music, including with the song Koka from the film Patiala House.
