This festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm all over India, especially in Mathura and Vrindavan. On this day, devotees keep a fast and worship God. Janmashtami fast is considered very fruitful. But, it is important to keep this fast properly and follow the rules. What to do on Janmashtami fast?

Get up before sunrise and take a bath?

  • It is considered auspicious to get up before sunrise on Janmashtami.
  • Take a bath and wear clean clothes. If possible, wear yellow clothes, because it is the favorite color of Lord Krishna.
  • After bathing, clean the place of worship and purify it with Ganga water.

Pledge to fast

  • Before starting the puja, install idols of Lord Krishna and other deities.
  • Pledge to fast with water, flowers and intact in your hand.
  • In the resolution, say that you are keeping this fast to please Lord Krishna and ask for blessings to complete it smoothly.

Prepare for worship

  • Bath the idol of Lord Krishna with Panchamrit (milk, curd, ghee, honey and Ganga water).
  • Offer sandalwood, kumkum, akshat and Tulsi Dal.
  • Offer Morpankh, Flute and Makhan-Mishri to God, because they are very dear to them.
  • Include different types of flowers, especially lotus and basil leaves, in worship.

Worship

  • Chant ‘Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare’ throughout the day.
  • Worship Lord Krishna’s Bal Roop (Laddu Gopal).
  • Perform Bhajan and Kirtan of God.
  • Listen or read the story of Janmashtami.

Celebrate birth at night

  • In the midnight, when Lord Krishna was born, welcome him by playing conch and bells.
  • Swing the Lord and make it sit in the cradle.
  • Perform aarti at this time and offer God to God.
  • The fast is passed only after 12 noon.
  • Do not leave Lord Krishna’s Bal Gopal Swaroop alone.

What not to do on Janmashtami fast?

  • Avoid tamasic food
  • Do not consume garlic, onion and carnivores on the day of fasting.
  • Stay away from alcohol and smoking.
  • Do not consume grains
  • Do not consume rice, wheat and lentils at all.

Do not break basil leaves

  • Do not break basil leaves on Janmashtami.
  • If you need a basil leaves, then break it a day in advance.

Do not insult others

  • Do not insult anyone on this day or do not suffer anyone.
  • Avoid fighting and anger
