The people of Mithila started yearning for water. King Janak could not bear to see such a condition of his subjects and he asked the wise sages for a solution to this problem. Then the sages, on the strength of their penance, suggested a solution that ‘If King Janak himself plows the field, it can rain in Mithila.’
Following the advice of the sages, the king accepted to plow the field. An auspicious time was determined for this. When King Janak started plowing the field, his plow hit a metal box. When I opened the box, there was a beautiful girl in it. King Janak adopted him as his child.
The tip of the plow is called Sita, hence King Janak named the girl Sita. Being the daughter of King Janak, she was also called Janaki. King Janak’s burning of the plow pleased Devraj Indra and there was heavy rain in his kingdom, ending the famine.
In this way Goddess Sita was born from the earth. Those who observe fast on Janaki Jayanti must listen to this story. Only then the full fruit of this fast is achieved.
