Story of Janaki Jayanti (Janaki Jayanti Vrat Katha )

According to the legend, once there was a severe famine in the kingdom of King Janak of Mithila state. There was no rain in the state for many years. To get rid of this problem, King Janak performed many yagyas and took advice from sages. Apart from this, he himself came forward to help the people and started plowing the fields with a plough. While plowing the field, King Janak’s plow got stuck at one place.

He made many attempts to find a solution, but the solution could not be found. The people present nearby also tried, but still no solution was found. After this, removal of soil started from the place where the plow was stuck. When the soil was removed, a girl was found there. King Janak had no children. So he took that girl in his lap. As soon as the girl appeared from the earth, it started raining heavily.

Seeing this, King Janak and the rest of the people became very happy. King Janak adopted that girl as his daughter and named her Sita. There was happiness in Mithila with the arrival of Mother Sita. The famine is over. Crops started blooming again in the fields. It is believed that the day Mother Sita met King Janak, it was the Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksha of Phalgun month. Since then this day is celebrated as Janaki Jayanti.
