Jammu-Srinagar Highway closed again after fresh landslides in Ramban, debris clearance underway

New Delhi: In Jammu Kashmir, the traffic on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway remained suspended on Tuesday after continuous landslides blocked both roads of the highway. As per the officials, the work to clean the fresh landslides is ongoing amid the heavy rains in the Ramban district.

The twin road in the affected stretch was declared unsafe for travelling due to debris and falling stones, forcing the authorities to halt vehicle movement to prevent any untoward incidents.

The 270 km-long strategic road is the only all-weather road linking Kashmir with the rest of the country. It was reopened for a few hours on Tuesday morning, but after two major landslides forced its closure once again.

Advisory from the authorities

The advisory read, ‘Road clearance is going on but it will take some time. Moreover, there is continuous rainfall along the highway.” The authorities have also advised commuters from travelling on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway until the road is fully restored.

The traffic police spokesperson even advised people to keep a track of the status of roads through the traffic police’s official social media handles and traffic control units and avoid paying heed to any sort of rumours.

What’s the latest update?

As per the traffic update issued at 10 am, the NH-44 remains blocked with road clearance operations underway at Shalgarhi and Banihal.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Traffic Raja Adil Hamid said that the clearance operations were started in the morning by the National Highways Authority. However, the intermittent falling of the stones continues, which is hampering the clearance process.

According to officials, more than 400 vehicles are stranded at different points along the highway.
