Jammu Rail Division shows grit as partial services restored

While special trains are being operated by the Jammu Division of Railways to facilitate the movement of stranded passengers, partial restoration of regular train services-disrupted due to severe flooding in the Jammu region-has also begun.

The resumption comes after days of suspension caused by incessant rains, landslides and damage to railway infrastructure.

According to officials, the New Delhi-Katra (12445) and Katra-New Delhi (12446) trains have been restored from Monday. Additionally, services of two other major trains-Kolkata-Jammu (13151) and Jammu-Kolkata (13152)-will be fully operational starting Tuesday. However, the movement of several other trains remains suspended.

“In the face of unprecedented adversity, the Jammu Division has shown remarkable resilience and unwavering determination. What began as a major disruption due to incessant rains, landslides, and flashfloods has turned into a story of coordinated action, selfless service and compassion,” a senior Railways official said.

To further support daily commuters and workers involved in restoration activities, the Railways has also launched a special shuttle service between Jammu and Katra. This service will run until September 15 and is expected to provide crucial support for both local passengers and labourers engaged in rebuilding efforts.

Rail traffic had come to a complete halt on the Jammu-Pathankot and Jammu-Katra routes due to damaged power lines and multiple landslides blocking the tracks. Thousands of passengers, including pilgrims en route to the Vaishno Devi shrine, were left stranded.

“The sheer scale of the disruption would have overwhelmed any system, but the Jammu Division rose to the challenge,” the official added.

Railway staff, in collaboration with the Government Railway Police (GRP) and district administration, established dedicated help desks at major stations including Jammu Tawi, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, and Pathankot. These teams worked around the clock to assist passengers and manage the crisis effectively.

The official further highlighted that senior officials, including the General Manager of Northern Railway and the Divisional Railway Manager of Jammu, were physically present on the ground, overseeing operations and providing moral support to staff under immense pressure.

“The Railway administration played a vital role not just in managing the crisis, but also in taking care of its employees. Their presence on the ground was crucial in maintaining morale and ensuring smooth coordination during this difficult period,” the official said.
