Pahalgam Terror Attack Live Updates: The Indian government has issued a stern warning to Pakistani nationals residing in the country, stating that those who fail to leave India by the designated deadlines will face arrest, prosecution, and possible jail terms of up to three years or fines of up to Rs 3 lakh, or both.
The ultimatum follows the deadly Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, where 26 people, mostly tourists, were killed in an attack allegedly linked to Pakistan-based terrorists.
As per the latest government order, Pakistani nationals holding SAARC visas were required to exit India by April 26, while those on medical visas must depart by April 29. A total of 12 types of visas, including business, tourist, journalist, film, student, and mountaineering, have been included in the exit order, with the deadline set for Sunday.
The crackdown comes under the newly enforced Immigration and Foreigners Act 2025, which stipulates stringent penalties for overstaying or violating visa conditions. According to the Act, any foreign national found in India beyond the expiry of their visa, or those staying without a valid passport, could face up to three years in jail, a fine of Rs 3 lakh, or both.
What has happened so far: The Union Ministry of Home Affairs, under the direction of Home Minister Amit Shah, has called on state governments to ensure that no Pakistani national remains in India beyond the deadline. Following Shah’s directive, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan conducted a video conference with chief secretaries of states, emphasizing the need for strict enforcement of the order.
