Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer claimed that star opener Yashasvi Jaiswal’s heated physical altercation with the Sri Lankan bowler Asitha Fernando was ‘totally unacceptable’ for a role model such as himself.
Jaffer speculated that it might be the ‘frustration’ of his performances falling short of his brilliance in all media. After being clean-bowled by Sri Lankan pacer Asitha Fernando on Monday, Jaiswal was observed pressing his helmet on his forehead. Both players were found to have violated Article 2.12 of the Code of Conduct, which deals with ‘inappropriate physical contact’ with a player, official, or spectator on the pitch. Jaiswal will pay a 25% fine and receive a demerit point for his admission of the infraction.

“This is totally unacceptable. This sort of behaviour should never happen. I’ve said it before-Jaiswal’s performance hasn’t been what we expect from him. We expect big scores from him, and maybe there’s some frustration creeping in. But this is the format he’s playing. He’s not playing consistently in ODIs or T20Is, so whenever he gets a chance in Tests, he needs to score big runs. If he doesn’t score runs and lets opportunities slip, he’s creating trouble for himself. That’s the first thing-you shouldn’t react like that,” said in a video on his YouTube channel.
reacted to the criticism on Instagram and claimed that he was provoked, and Jaffer responded that only that could justify his response.
“Unless the bowler said something really inappropriate, which we don’t know about from here, reacting like that and being physical is not acceptable. This has happened a couple of times with him now. This is not good sportsmanship. Regardless of who the player is, this is not acceptable. He needs to understand that a lot of people look up to him and see him as a role model,” he added.
Jaiswal was dismissed for 45 runs in the first innings. Meanwhile, India declared their innings at 503/9 on Monday.
