During its 3-day visit to Russia, Jaishankar co-chair the 26th session of the India-Russia Inter-Government Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientist, Technical and Cultural Cooperation. He addressed the India-Russia Business Forum meeting in Moscow. This further strengthened bilateral relations.
Jaishankar met Russian External Affairs Minister Sergei Lavarov and reviewed the bilateral agenda. Both shared views on regional and global issues. While answering questions during a joint press conference with Lavarov, Jaishankar referred to American decision to impose 25 percent tariff on Indian goods for the purchase of Russian oil. Said that not India, China is the largest buyer of Russian oil. The European Union is the largest buyer of LNG. The argument given to India to impose tariffs is surprising. We are not the biggest buyers of Russian oil, it is China. We are not the biggest buyers of LNG, that is the European Union. We are not the country that has brought the biggest trade with Russia after 2022. I think there are some countries in the south. We are a country where Americans have said for the last few years that we should do everything to stabilize the world energy market, including buying oil from Russia. Incidentally, we also buy oil from America and that volume has increased. So honestly, we are very surprised by the argument that you (media) mentioned.
America has imposed 50% tariff on India to buy Russian oil
US President Donald Trump announced 25 percent tariff on Indian goods in July. The Indo-US trade agreement was expected to help avoid high tariffs. A few days later, he imposed an additional 25 per cent tariff citing Russian oil imports. This made the total tariff to 50 percent.

This requires rapid removal of non-tariff barriers and regulatory obstacles. Increasing India’s exports to Russia in areas such as agriculture, pharma and textiles will definitely help in fixing imbalance.
