New Delhi: A shocking case from Jaipur’s prestigious Neerja Modi School has revealed that Class 4 student Amaira Kumar Meena, who died by suicide on November 1, had repeatedly sought help from her class teacher over prolonged bullying, but received no support. A two-member CBSE inquiry committee, probing the incident, has submitted a shocking report that points to systemic negligence, ignored complaints, evidence tampering and a dangerous lack of sensitivity within the school.
According to the CBSE report, Amaira approached her class teacher five times, seeking help for 45 minutes, after she was allegedly teased and humiliated by classmates over content displayed on a digital slate shortly after 11 am. CCTV footage shows her appearing puzzled, embarrassed and disturbed, urging classmates to erase what was written.
Instead of helping, the teacher shouted at her multiple times, made remarks that shocked the class, and dismissed her concerns, a pattern that had reportedly continued for 18 months.
Timeline of events: November 1
Earlier that morning, Amaira was seen dancing, chatting, and eating chocolates and golgappas, appearing cheerful. After the slate incident, her distress escalated. She skipped lunch, looked visibly upset, and eventually walked out of her ground-floor classroom. She then went to the fourth floor, from where she allegedly jumped to her death.
Long history of unaddressed bullying
The CBSE report details several ignored complaints:
• A boy misquoted her greeting “hello” as “I love you”
• A child showed her the middle finger
• She was verbally abused with sexual remarks
• A boy hit her, but the teacher took no action
• She begged her parents to shift her to another school
Each time, parents approached the school, but were either dismissed or told Amaira must “adjust”. The teacher admitted receiving complaints about “bad words”, but took no action.
Possible evidence tampering
The area where Amaira fell was washed by school authorities, reducing chances of forensic examination. The CBSE flagged this as a serious lapse.
School failed to create safe environment: CBSE
The report states that Amaira’s death stemmed from the teacher’s “non-response, lack of empathy and failure to intervene”. It concludes that the school “failed to maintain a healthy atmosphere” and ignored repeated reports of harassment.
CBSE issues notice
The board has sought a formal explanation from Neerja Modi School within 30 days, warning of possible penalties, including actions under the POCSO Act violations.
Amaira’s teachers and classmates described her as a cheerful, all-rounder student, whose trust in the system collapsed amid unchecked bullying and institutional apathy.
