The last date to file ITR is now close to 15 September 2025, but so far the pace of filing returns for this financial year 2024-25 is quite slow. Let us know that out of 13.35 crore registered taxpayers till September 7, only 4.89 crore have filed their returns. Of these, 4.63 crore returns have been verified and only 3.35 crore returns have been processed. This situation is increasing anxiety among taxpayers and many people believe that the Income Tax Department can extend the deadline.
Why is there a demand to increase deadline?
This time, due to many reasons, the demand to extend the last date of ITR filing is gaining momentum. The biggest problem is related to the online portal of the Income Tax Department. Many taxpayers and professionals have complained of frequent technical disturbances during login and e-filing. Apart from this, due to lack of coordination in financial data in the annual information details (AIS) and Form 26AS, taxpayers are facing difficulty in understanding and filing.
According to the Business Today report, business organizations like Chartered Accountants Association, Surat (CAAS) and Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI) are also concerned about these problems. He has said that this year the work of filing returns has become more difficult and time -taken than normal.
Technical troubles and new rules increased the burden
This time many changes have been made in ITR form and utilities, which has made a little complicated to file returns for taxpayers. Apart from this, the new audit report format has also put separate pressure on accounts and professionals. In such a situation, due to lack of time, most taxpayers and professionals are not able to complete reporting. For this reason, they are appealing to the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) to extend the last date to file returns.
Will the date of September 15 increase?
According to the news of Financial Express, tax experts and chartered accountants hope that the government can increase the time limit of ITR filing. Especially for those taxpayers who do not have an audit, the deadline of September 15 is looking a bit difficult.
