ITR Filing 2025: The last date for filing income tax returns is close. This time the last date is on 15 September 2025 and crores of taxpayers across the country have already filed their returns. Meanwhile, many people have got refunds, but if you are among those who have not yet come to the tax refund, then there is no need to panic.
There may be some common causes of delay in refund, which are necessary to understand. In most cases, if you have filled the return correct and have verified on time, then the refund can come in 7 to 15 days. In some cases it is found in less than a week. But if there is a disturbance, the case may be prolonged. Let us know what can be the common reasons for delay in refund…
Wrong or incomplete bank details
If you have made a mistake in the bank account number, IFSC code or name while filing the returns, then the refund will not be transferred. So always make sure that the information of the bank is complete and correct.
Difference between Return and Form 26AS/AIS
If there is any difference between the returns filled by you and the Form 26AS or AIS (Annual Information Statement) with you, then the return processing may be delayed. For example, if you do not mention any income or have wrong claim of TDS Credit.
ITR Verification did not happen
It is not enough to file a return, it is also necessary to verify it. Without e-verification, your return will not go to the process and will not get a refund.
Departmental inquiry or scrutiny
In some cases, the Income Tax Department suspects that a large amount has been claimed in the return or there may be any disturbance. Such returns are prevented for investigation which delays refunds.
Arrear tax adjust
If you have any tax arrears, then the new refund can be adjusted in it. In such cases the department sends notice and the refund is stopped.
What to do when delayed?
If you have filled the returns at the right time and have also verified it and the refund has not come till now, then first of all, log on to the Income Tax Department website and check your ITR processing status. If the process is done and the refund is showing the status issue, then check the bank statement. If some disturbances are seen, you can request the refund recycling. If your refund takes more than 30 days, then you can also get interest under the Income Tax Act. However, this rule applies with certain conditions.
