The last date for filing Income Tax Return (ITR) for FY 2025 is 15 September 2025. In such a situation, those who have not yet filed their ITR, should do this work as soon as possible. But the taxpayers who have already filled ITR, their concern is now increasing about refund.
Can tax refund be a long time?
Many people hop that tax refund will be found in a few weeks as soon as the returns are filled, but this does not happen every time. Explain that the Income Tax Department has a legally 9 months to process refund. This time is counted since the end of the financial year, for which you have filed a return. However, refund is usually available in 4 to 6 weeks. But due to the complexity of returns and the mistakes made in it, this process can also be long.
Mismach can make a big problem in TDS
The most common reason for delay in refund is the missamach of TDS (tax deducted at source). Many times taxpayers make a mistake that they do not update the right TDS details or fill the wrong form. If the information about the TDS given in your ITR and the figures recorded in the Form 26AS, then the Income Tax Department stops refund and can also send you notice.
ITR-1 people get refunds quickly
ITR-1 comes in the early process returns, which are filed by ordinary employed people. At the same time, it takes longer to process forms like ITR-2, ITR-3 and ITR-4 because the sources of income are complicated, such as business income or capital gains. Cases related to business often require additional investigation, which delays refunds.
The last time can also be a hurry
By coming near the deadline of ITR filing, a large number of people file returns together, which puts heavy pressure on the system. Due to this, there may also be a delay in issuing returns processing and refunds. So try not to wait for the last date and fill the returns in time.
What to do if the refund is not found?
If you have filed the return but have not yet come to the refund, then first check the refund status by logging on to the income tax portal. If ‘processing’ is written in the status, then you have to wait a little. But if the refund is stopped due to any mistake or missing, then read the notice under section 143 (1) carefully and file online rectifies when needed. If the problem still persists, then you can file a complaint on the e-governance portal or contact the Helpline of the Income Tax Department.
