ITR Filing 2025 Scam Alert: Money-related frauds are a scammer’s favourites! With the Income Tax Return Filing (ITR Filing 2025) on, such fraudsters have left no stone unturned. These scammers are sending emails to taxpayers, asking them to click on a link and fill their personal and financial details manually to get a Rs 50,000 tax refund.

After receiving complaints from taxpayers of such emails, the government’s PIB Fact Check team has warned that such emails could be potentially fraudulent or phishing emails.

How are scammers duping taxpayers?

They are sending an email that has a link asking taxpayers to click and furnish their personal or financial details manually.

The email may also ask them to download an attachment for ‘manual verification’ or e-verification’.

It may also ask for information such as passwords, PIN numbers, or bank or credit card details.

Suspicious email content 

One of the emails that many taxpayers are getting and that was also mentioned by the PIB Fact Check team on its X account reads, “Dear Taxpayer, This is an official notification regarding your Income Tax Refund for Assessment Year 2024-25. Amount eligible: Rs 50,000.”

It further reads, “Why manual verification? As per latest RBI & PMLA norms, all refunds above Rs 25,000 require recipient confirmation to prevent unauthorised payouts and protect taxpayers.”

What does PIB Fact Check Unit say?

The PIB’s Fact Check Unit has warned taxpayers against such fraudulent tactics, asking them to refrain from sharing personal or financial details through any email, SMS, or phone call.

The Fact Check Unit said that the I-T Department may ask for personal information through an email, but it never sends an email asking for passwords, PIN numbers, bank account or credit card numbers, or any such details.
