Mumbai: Kareena Kapoor has opened up about the knife attack on her husband, actor Saif Ali Khan, describing it as a horrifying experience for the entire family.
The actress recalled the emotional toll of the incident, including seeing Saif injured and bleeding, and revealed that their younger son, Jeh, also witnessed the ordeal.
Addressing the conspiracy theories surrounding the attack, Kareena said, “I don’t understand the conspiracy theories. That means that the people thought that cops are in cahoots with us because they obviously caught the guy! So then? Are they in the conspiracy? Saif’s son took him to hospital with Hari [house help]. It is really bad that people had those concerns. I was hailing a rickshaw in my night t-shirt. Luckily no one got that on video, Karan. I was screaming on the road. I was running like a mad woman while he was bleeding and I looked at Saif in the lift, and when I saw him I said, ‘Don’t do this.’ The first thing that Tim said was, ‘Abba are you going to die?’”
Saif, meanwhile, described the incident as “the worst night in the history of nights” and recalled how he managed to remain calm despite the severity of the situation.
The actor also spoke about the extent of his injuries and the challenge of keeping his composure with his children around.
Kareena recalled how serious Saif’s condition was after the attack, saying he was unable to walk.
She revealed that doctors had to move his nerves to remove the knife lodged in his spine. “I was a wreck, he was fine,” she said.
The actress also shared that Jeh later gifted his father his plastic sword, hoping it would protect him in the future. Kareena said the little one looks up to Saif as “some sort of Iron Man”.
The incident occurred in the early hours of January 16, 2025, when an intruder allegedly entered Saif Ali Khan’s Bandra apartment through the fire escape.
According to the prosecution, he first confronted the nurse caring for Saif and Kareena’s younger son, Jehangir, and warned her to remain silent. He allegedly attacked her when she tried to pick up the child.
The nurse’s screams alerted the couple. When she asked the intruder what he wanted, he allegedly demanded ₹1 crore, saying, “Paisa chahiye.” Saif was stabbed during the ensuing confrontation.
The actor sustained six stab wounds, including a serious spinal cord injury. A 2.5-inch knife fragment lodged in his spine was removed during emergency surgery at Lilavati Hospital.
He also underwent treatment for injuries to his hand and neck before being discharged five days later.
Police arrested Mohammad Shariful Islam in Thane two days after the attack.
They alleged that he was a Bangladeshi national staying illegally in India under the assumed name Vijay Das.
He faces charges of armed robbery, causing grievous hurt and house-trespass, along with alleged violations of the Foreigners Act and Passport (Entry into India) Rules.
