Israel Strikes Lebanon: How did Israel and Lebanon become arch enemies? Counter-attacks raised questions

Amidst the ongoing Israel-America action against Iran, the Lebanese organization Hezbollah attacked Israel. In return, Israeli security forces also retaliated and destroyed many positions of Hezbollah. Angered by this attack, Israel has virtually ordered the evacuation of 53 villages in Lebanon.

The enmity between Israel and Lebanon is not a new thing, rather its history is decades old. This is a matter of concern for the whole world today. The recent attacks between these two countries have once again fueled this old rivalry.

Let us know how old is the enmity between Israel and Lebanon? What are the three big reasons due to which both the countries remain thirsty for each other’s blood?

When and why did the controversy start?

The roots of the dispute between Israel and Lebanon lie in the year 1948. This was the same year when Israel came into existence as an independent country before the world. As soon as Israel was formed, the Arab countries attacked it. Lebanon was also among the Arab countries that opposed Israel.

After the 1948 war, a large number of Palestinian refugees went to Lebanon. With the arrival of these refugees, the demography and politics of Lebanon began to change. Gradually, Lebanese soil started being used for attacks against Israel. From here began the process of distrust and conflict between the two countries which continues till today.

There can be many reasons for the tension between Israel and Lebanon, but there are mainly three reasons which do not allow this fire to be extinguished. Something or the other always goes on between the two.

1- Rise and influence of Hezbollah

The biggest reason for the enmity between Lebanon and Israel is Hezbollah. Hezbollah is a Shia militant organization and political party in Lebanon. It was established in the 1980s. Its main objective is to oppose Israel and expel it from the region. Hezbollah has the open support of Iran. Iran provides it with weapons, money and training.

Israel considers Hezbollah the biggest threat to its existence. Hezbollah often fires rockets at Israel’s northern areas, in response to which Israel attacks inside Lebanon. This trend has been going on for decades and who knows how long it will continue.

2- Border dispute and Blue Line

There is also a deep dispute between the two countries regarding land and maritime boundaries. There is no official international border between Israel and Lebanon. Instead, there is a Blue Line, determined by the United Nations, that separates the two. Both countries often accuse each other of violating this line. Apart from this, there has also been controversy regarding gas and oil reserves in the sea.

Although an agreement was recently reached regarding the maritime boundary, the land dispute is still not resolved. A small area named Shebaa Farms is the center of this dispute, which Lebanon considers its own and Israel has occupied it.

3- Palestinian issue and refugees

Millions of Palestinian refugees live in Lebanon. These people settled in Lebanon after the wars of 1948 and 1967. Palestinian groups present on Lebanese soil have fought a guerrilla war against Israel for a long time. In the 1970s, the Palestine Liberation Organization made Lebanon its main base. Fed up with their attacks, Israel launched a major attack on Lebanon in 1982 and reached the capital Beirut. Although Israel later withdrew, the Palestinian issue made Lebanon the center of anti-Israel activities.

1982 war and occupation of South Lebanon

The year 1982 is very important in the relations between Israel and Lebanon. Israel had started Operation Peace for Galilee to eliminate the Palestinian fighters present in Lebanon. During this war, the Israeli army captured a large part of South Lebanon. This occupation lasted for about 18 years. Israel withdrew its forces in 2000, but this long occupation filled the hearts of the Lebanese people with hatred towards Israel. During this period, Hezbollah received public support and emerged as a powerful military organization.

The fierce war of 2006

In the year 2006, another fierce war took place between Israel and Hezbollah. This war lasted for 34 days. In this, Lebanon’s infrastructure was completely destroyed and Israel also suffered a lot. There was a ceasefire after the intervention of the United Nations, but peace was never established. Since then, sporadic attacks continue from both sides.

Current situation and latest attacks

In the last few months the situation has once again gone out of control. The Iran-Israel-US conflict is adding fuel to this fire. After a long conflict in Gaza, Hezbollah had intensified attacks on Israel. In response, Israel launched rapid air strikes on Hezbollah targets inside Lebanon. Many senior commanders of Hezbollah were killed in these attacks. Israel says that it is carrying out this attack for the safety of its northern citizens. At the same time, Lebanon considers it an attack on its sovereignty. This tension has created the threat of a major war throughout the Middle East.

The enmity between Israel and Lebanon is not just a fight between two countries, but it is the result of regional politics, religious differences and the interference of international powers. Unless a permanent solution is found to issues like Hezbollah, border dispute and Palestinian refugees, it is difficult to expect peace in the region. Small attacks and retaliatory actions are taking lives of innocent people. Countries around the world are appealing to resolve this issue through dialogue, so that another major humanitarian crisis can be avoided, but there is no effect on them.
