Ishan Kishan Breaks Dinesh Karthik’s Record; Becomes First Player After 39 Years To Achieve Stunning Feat

Ishan Kishan gave a shining example of leading from the front as he continued his dream run of form with the bat in the 2026 Duleep Trophy final.

The East Zone skipper registered a double hundred for the East Zone on Monday (September 7) on the second day of play at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Kishan walked out to bat on the first day after winning the toss and choosing to bat. The left-hander came out at number five with the team making a solid start at 147-3. He ensured they built on the momentum and put up a massive total, which is nearing the 600 mark. The skipper put up a a massive 230-run partnership for the ffith wicket with fellow cenutrion Kumar Kushagra (101 of 132).

Ishan Kishan Creates History

Kishan has become only the second captain in the tournament’s 65-year history to score a double century in the summit clash. The feat was only achieved by Anshuman Gaekwad before in the tournament’s rich history. Overall, the Jharkhand cricket star is only the seventh player to reach the milestone in the summit clash of the competition.

Kishan continued his onslaught after reaching the milestone and now has the record for the most runs by a captain in an innings in the history of Duleep Trophy finals. Gaekwad previously held the feat for 39 years with a knock of 216.

He also became only the fourth player after Raman Lamba, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Cheteshwar Pujara to achieve the feat in the summit clash of the zonal first-class tournament.

Kishan now has also made the highest individual score by a designated wicket-keeper batter in the Duleep Trophy final. Dinesh Karthik had previously held the record after making a knock of 183 for South Zone against West Zone in the iconic 2010 summit clash.

Meanwhile, Kishan has also become the first East Zone batter to score a double century in the final of the competition. The record for the most runs for them in the tournament’s final previously belonged to Wriddhiman Saha (170 in 2012 vs Central Zone). Overall, he is only the third player after Arun Lal (twice) and Saba Karim to register the milestone at any stage of the competition for the two-time champions and second to cross the 250 mark.

This is the second double ton of Kishan’s career in first-class cricket after a knock of 273 against Delhi for Jharkhand in 2016 at Thumba.
