The government has fixed an annual interest rate of 8.25% on the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) for FY 2024-25. This interest is calculated on the closing balance of your EPF account every month, but it is credited to your account only once a year. That is, interest will be added at the end of the year on the money that will be in your account.
But, do you know that if your EPF account remains inactive for 36 months continuously, then you will not get interest on it? Inactive means that there is no transaction in the account such as depositing money or withdrawing money. Because only interest credit is not considered transaction.
When is PF account inactive?
According to the EPFO ββrule, if your EPF account lasts for 3 years i.e. 36 months without any transaction, then it becomes inactive. This directly means that you will not get any interest on that account anymore. Especially if you have retired at the age of 55, then your account will be considered active only for three years and after the age of 58, this account will become inactive.
So if you change the job then it becomes very important to transfer. If you are not doing a job at the moment, it would be better to withdraw EPF money so that your money is not stuck in the inactive account. You can know the status of your account with EPFO ββwebsite or mobile app.
EPFO advised members
EPFO told people on social media platform X that if the EPF account is not transferred or withdrawn for 36 months, then that account will become inactive and will not get interest on it. EPFO says that if you are still working, then transfer your old account money to the new EPF account. If you are not working at the moment, it would be better to withdraw EPF money.
