Rajasthan Electricity Update: Is your meter not smart? The Rajasthan government removed the smart meter mandatory, the old meters will also be accepted. Changes are necessary in 24-72 hours. Information about bill and consumption from mobile app will be available immediately.
Rajasthan Electricity Meter Guideline: The Rajasthan government has made major changes in the electricity connection and metering system. Now smart meters will not be mandatory to take new connections or change the bad/burnt meters. Where the installation of smart meter is not completed, old traditional meters will also be accepted.
The reason and purpose of change
Electricity distribution companies (DISCOMS) released a new guideline on 20 August 2025. Chairman Aarti Dogra said that the work of changing new connections and meters was lagging behind due to limited staff near the Advance Metering Infrastructure Service Provider (AMISP). The main objective of this change is to protect consumers from any kind of delay in power supply.
Major points of new guidelines
- In areas where smart meter installation is complete or continuing, new connections and meters will be replaced by only smart meters.
- The remaining areas will be allowed to replace new connections and meters from traditional meters.
- It is mandatory to change meters within 24 hours in urban areas and within 72 hours in rural areas.
- If the meter is not changed in two months, the consumer will get a discount of 5% in the bill.

Benefits from smart meters
According to the Energy Minister, the smart meter is based on modern technology and can be connected to the mobile app. Its benefits:
- Details of electricity consumption day and night will be found immediately on mobile.
- The wait for the bill will end.
- Consumers will be able to control their power consumption better.
- Complaints related to the bill will be reduced.
Instructions given to officers and agencies
It is mandatory for all DISCOM and related agencies to follow the new guideline. The AMISP and IT teams will work together to speed up the supply of smart meters and apply the rollout program smoothly. This rule will remain in force until the smart meter installation in the entire state starts regularly.
Rajasthan Government initiative: facility and security for consumers
This step of the Rajasthan government is considered important towards increasing the facility of consumers and reducing the obstruction of power supply. With the option of both smart meters and traditional meters, consumers will now experience more flexibility and convenience.
