India’s pace attack appears to be entering a new phase, with the selectors reportedly prioritising young fast bowlers over experienced names like Mohammad Shami.
Mohammad Shami’s exclusion from India’s Test squad for the Sri Lanka series has strengthened the belief that the team management is moving ahead with a long-term plan centred on the next generation of pacers. Despite making a strong comeback through domestic cricket, the veteran fast bowler has once again been left out.
After being dropped from the national side, Shami returned to domestic cricket and impressed with his performances. He bowled long spells, picked up 37 wickets in the Ranji Trophy and repeatedly stated that he was fully fit. However, his efforts were not enough to earn a place back in the Indian squad.
According to a report, the Indian selectors have already identified a group of 15 young fast bowlers across formats who are expected to lead India’s pace attack in the coming years. The report added that Shami is not part of those long-term plans.
The report further stated that the selectors are already preparing for the next World Test Championship cycle and the 2027 ODI World Cup. Instead of extending the careers of senior pacers, the focus is on giving younger bowlers valuable international experience now so they are ready for future tournaments. The transition within the Indian team is reportedly already in progress.
Jasprit Bumrah continues to be India’s main fast bowler. However, with his workload expected to be managed carefully, the selectors know they cannot depend on him for every Test match or every series. As a result, building a strong pace unit around Bumrah has become a key priority.
Mohammad Shami’s experience could still have been valuable during this transition. Along with strengthening the bowling attack whenever Bumrah was unavailable, he could also have guided the younger fast bowlers. However, according to the report, the selectors believe it is time to move forward with their long-term strategy rather than returning to experienced players.
With Shami seemingly falling out of contention and Bumrah unlikely to play every Test in a long series, Mohammed Siraj is expected to shoulder greater responsibility. At the same time, the selectors are reportedly keen to fast-track a new group of pacers capable of sharing the workload in the years ahead. The report added that Ajit Agarkar and the selection committee have largely decided to back youth over experience.
