The government has taken a big step to ensure the purity of silver. Till now, hallmarking was mandatory only on gold jewelery, but now the same system is also being brought for silver. The process of silver hallmarking will begin from 1 September 2025. The purpose of this is to guarantee the purity to the customers, so that they can get the full value of their money.
However, in the beginning, this rule will be voluntary, that is, consumers can buy silver with hallmarks and even without hallmark. But the possibility of its mandatory in future cannot be ruled out. Like gold, customers now want a quality seal in silver, which will make shopping more transparent and reliable.
Quality will increase trust
The question has arisen in the market whether silver will become expensive after hallmarking? Experts believe that this will not directly affect prices. However, the confidence of the customers will increase, which can lead to more demand for hallmark silver. Hallmarking is the seal of a certainty, which shows what percentage of the silver is buying it is pure. This will reduce the scope of fraud in shopping and the consumer will get the right product in lieu of their amount.
Number will tell silver purity
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has set six different purity standards for silver, which will be mentioned on jewelry or items. Every number will indicate how pure that silver is.
- 800 stamps are pure 80% of silver in it, other metals like copper are added in the remaining 20%.
- The 835 stamp depicts silver with 83.5% purity.
- 900 stamps are pure 90% of silver in it, which is usually used in coins and special jewelry.
- 925 Stamp This is the most popular category, called “Sterling Silver”. It contains 92.5% purity.
- 970 Stamp This is 97% purity silver, which is used in special pots and designer jewelery.
- 990 stamps call it Fine Silver, in which silver is 99% pure. It is very soft, so it is used more in bar and coins.
These standards will now make it easier for consumers to identify the quality of silver and the accountability of vendors will also be decided.
