Is Ranbir Kapoor Retiring? Ramayana’s Lord Rama Clarifies ‘Last Decade As Actor’ Remark; Hints At Directorial Debut

Ranbir Kapoor is looking forward to a new chapter in his career. Amid Ramayana’s success, the actor is hoping to make his directorial debut within the next two to three years. In a recent interview alongside co-star Sai Pallavi, he revealed that he has already begun working on a screenplay. Ranbir also sparked concern by calling the coming decade his “last decade as an actor,” but quickly clarified that he meant the kind of leading roles he might get to play, not that he was retiring from films altogether. Ranbir currently plays Lord Rama in Nitesh Tiwari and Namit Malhotra’s mythological epic.

Ranbir hints at directorial debut

Ranbir Kapoor has long expressed his desire to explore filmmaking beyond acting. In his latest conversation with BBC Asian Network, the actor revealed that he hopes to move behind the camera soon. The 44-year-old said he wants to complete his existing film commitments before beginning work on his directorial debut. He also indicated that he has found a story he wants to bring to the screen and has started writing a screenplay.

The actor’s comments suggest that his first film as a director may not necessarily feature him in the lead. He has also spoken about having a story in mind that he would like to develop as a filmmaker. “I do want to kind of pivot towards that. I don’t want to direct myself for sure. So I really want to get these films done and get on floors with my directorial debut within two or three years, I hope,” he said.

Ranbir Kapoor’s ‘last decade as an actor’ remark

Another remark from the interview caught fans’ attention.  described the coming years as his “last decade as an actor”, leading to questions about whether he was considering stepping away from leading roles. However, he clarified that he was not looking at his career through the audience’s perspective or worrying about whether viewers might get bored of seeing him on screen. Instead, he was reflecting on the kind of roles he currently gets to play.

“I’m not looking at it from an audience’s lens, trying to predict that they might get bored of me or I’m too old. I’m looking at it through my lens. If I stay inspired, if I’m getting good work, I would 100 per cent do it,” he explained.

Ranbir added that acting would remain an option as long as he continued to find interesting work. He also described the feeling of being creatively inspired as a luxury. For the actor, direction has been a long-standing passion rather than a career move prompted by a lack of acting opportunities. “It was always my passion. It was always something I always wanted to do. It was to tell a story. And finally, I have a story, and I hope I can create it and then make it,” he said.
