The Delhi Police on Wednesday denied reports that Jantar Mantar has been closed for protests, saying the venue continues to remain open for demonstrations with prior permission.
The clarification came after posts on social media claimed that the protest site had been shut down to prevent public gatherings.
In a post on X, the Delhi Police called the claims “entirely false, misleading, and devoid of facts” and said Jantar Mantar remains an authorised site for peaceful demonstrations.
The message read: “As per the Hon’ble Supreme Court Order and the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) issued by the Delhi Police thereupon in compliance of it , a maximum of 1,000 persons may be permitted at the venue. This permission is granted by the competent authority upon formal application by the concerned organizers or individual(s), subject to adherence of prescribed terms and conditions.
It strongly advised the citizens not to believe or circulate unverified information and to rely strictly on official communications for accurate updates.
The CJP held a 36-day protest at Jantar Mantar demanding the resignation of then Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The protest ended last Saturday after Pradhan resigned from the post.
CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke on Wednesday warned that students could launch another agitation if protesters continue to face police action.
“These students are not terrorists. They are the future of our country,” Dipke said. He added that the students could take political action if the government failed to address their concerns. The warning came after the CJP accused the Centre of going back on an assurance that protesters would not face legal action.
CJP spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka alleged that the government had breached an understanding reached on July 25 and claimed that hundreds of students had been arrested in BJP-ruled states.
Meanwhile, security at Jantar Mantar has been increased, with additional personnel deployed at the site. Barricades have also been strengthened, while a company of the Rapid Action Force (RAF) has been stationed at the venue along with local police personnel, officials said.
The CJP has demanded the withdrawal of all FIRs registered against protesters and threatened to restart its agitation if the cases are not withdrawn.
