New Delhi: Renowned director David Dhawan, who has given the audience several comedy films, has now hinted at his retirement. Yes, you read it right! He is currently busy with his upcoming film, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, starring Varun Dhawan, and it might be his last film.
David Dhawan has left everyone rolling with laughter with his films, including Hero No 1, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya, Yeh Hai Jalwa, Biwi No 1, Dulhan Hum Le Jaayenge, Haseena Maan Jaayegi, and Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, among others.
Is David Dhawan retiring?
In a recent interview with the news agency ANI, David Dhawan hinted at his retirement. During the conversation, he hinted that Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai could be his final film due to health concerns. He shared with the publication that after the film, he will just be “Varun’s father” and won’t be involved in his films, but will always be there with him all the time.
David also shared about his health concerns and shared that he was very “unwell during the shooting of his film and Varun took great care of him. “He had all doctors’ numbers, stayed in touch with them, and was always there. He’s a complete family man”, the director added.

David Dhawan also opened up about his relationship with his son Varun Dhawan and shared that, despite their familial ties, Varun is first the actor on the set and then his son. He stated that they do have a smooth understanding but the actor do have playful complaints about not receiving the complete script. To which, David said, “In our time, films were made on trust. Even actors like Salman Khan or Govinda or Sanjay Dutt didn’t always hear full scripts. We narrated scenes, and that’s how films were made.”
David Dhawan on backlash over film’s teaser
Last month, the teaser of Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai was unveiled and was trolled for featuring two AI babies. The clip showed two AI toddlers speaking about their having different mothers but the father. Reacting to the backlash, he said, “There is no AI in the film. We wanted to do something different. We thought it looked ok. The story is also different) It’s just a teaser. You’ll get to know when the songs will come. The picture has got nothing to do (with AI).”
Meanwhile, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, is slated to release in theatres on May 22. The film stars Mrunal Thakur, Pooja Hegde, Maniesh Paul, Chunky Panday, Jimmy Shergill, and Mouni Roy, among others.
