Why is Trump eyeing Kharg Island?
‘Kharg Island’ located in the Persian Gulf is also called ‘Orphan Pearl’ or ‘Forbidden Island’. This island is smaller in size than Lakshadweep, but its importance is much greater. Iran sends 90% of its total oil exports from this small island. In 2024, Iran earned about Rs 7.2 lakh crore ($78 billion) by selling oil, the main center of which was Kharg. Apart from this, the money for Iran’s missile and drone program comes from the oil extracted from this island. Experts say that till date no government in any country has fallen due to air strikes. If Trump wants to change the regime in Iran, he will have to get on the ground (Boots on ground) and Kharg Island is the perfect place for this.
US’s secret military plan to attack Iran
According to defense expert Sandeep Unnithan, India Today reported that America can launch a major military operation to capture Kharg Island. There can be 4 main stages of this operation. The first is to destroy Iranian radar and air defenses, which has already begun with Friday’s attack. Second, sealing of the island’s only airstrip by American Special Forces (Navy SEALs, Delta Force). Third, landing thousands of troops using C-130 Hercules aircraft and Chinook helicopters and fourth, securing oil terminals and deploying ‘anti-drone systems’ to stop Iranian drone attacks.
What effect will the attack on Kharg Island have on India?
- The oil produced from Kharg mainly goes to Asian countries like India and China. If it is attacked, the supply chain may be blocked.
- Iran has taken the Strait of Hormuz hostage. If the war increases here, the global supply of crude oil will stop.
- According to global banking firm JP Morgan, the attack on Kharg could wreak havoc in energy markets, causing petrol and diesel prices to reach record levels. Due to this, it is being estimated that if this happens, petrol and diesel may become quite expensive in India.
