IPL 2026: Will Sanju Samson Get CSK Captaincy After Blockbuster Trade From Rajasthan Royals?

Sanju Samson’s sensational move to Chennai Super Kings created an immediate buzz across the IPL fraternity, with many wondering whether the experienced wicketkeeper-batter would take over the captaincy of the five-time champions.

However, CSK swiftly ended all speculation on November 15 by reaffirming Ruturaj Gaikwad as the skipper for the 2026 season.

The franchise made its stance clear through a post on X shortly after announcing their retentions. The message – “Lead the way, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad” – confirmed that Gaikwad, and not Samson, would lead the side. This settles the debate that had picked up momentum ever since Samson’s trade was made official in a major swap deal involving Rajasthan Royals.

Gaikwad, who debuted for CSK in 2020Sa, has been a key figure for the side, amassing 2500+ runs in his IPL career. Although he was appointed captain ahead of the 2024 season, his early leadership tenure has been turbulent. CSK missed out on the playoffs in 2024, and in 2025 Gaikwad featured in only five matches before an injury at Guwahati ruled him out. MS Dhoni stepped in for the rest of the season, but CSK endured their worst campaign ever, finishing at the bottom of the table – a first in their illustrious history.

Samson’s arrival naturally sparked discussions about a possible leadership change. After all, he has been Rajasthan Royals’ most successful captain, winning 32 of the 65 matches he led. But CSK have opted for continuity by backing Gaikwad once again.

Meanwhile, Rajasthan Royals face a leadership transition of their own after parting ways with Samson. Senior all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who returned to his former franchise as part of the trade, is widely expected to take over the captaincy in IPL 2026. Jadeja previously led CSK briefly in 2022 and is believed to be the frontrunner for RR’s top role. If the franchise looks elsewhere, young talents like Riyan Parag, Yashasvi Jaiswal, or Dhruv Jurel could also be considered.

For now, the captaincy question at CSK has been firmly put to rest – Samson will play a key role in yellow, but Gaikwad will continue to lead the legacy.
