This time too there will be only 74 matches in IPL, whereas earlier there were reports of 84 matches. 70 league matches will end on May 24. After this, the play-off will start from 26th May, in which Qualifier 1, Eliminator, Qualifier 2 and then the final will be played on 31st May.
Participation of players in IPL 2026
A total of 250 players including all 10 teams are participating in this season of IPL. Of these, 77 are foreign players, who come from 8 different countries. 49 foreign players were either retained by the franchise or traded to another team, and the remaining 29 players were bought in the IPL 2026 mini-auction.
Recently, Zimbabwe’s Blessing Muzarabani, Sri Lanka’s Dasun Shanaka and Australia’s Spencer Johnson have joined the IPL 2026 teams after terminating their contracts with their PSL franchises.
Maximum 17 players in IPL 2026 are from South Africa. After this there are 16 players from Australia, 12 from New Zealand and 10 from England. At the same time, 9 players from West Indies, 8 from Sri Lanka, four from Afghanistan and one from Zimbabwe are playing in this league.

The number of foreign players has increased from 62 in the last IPL season to 78 in IPL 2026, which shows how much teams are relying on international talent to strengthen their squads. Which franchise has the most foreign players?
According to IPL rules, each franchise can have a maximum of 8 foreign players in its squad, but only 4 can be given a chance in the playing XI of any match. In IPL 2026, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings, all these teams have 8-8 foreign players in their squads.
At the same time, Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants have only seven foreign players in their squads. Teams are balancing their rosters with top quality homegrown talent to adhere to playing XI rules and maintain squad flexibility throughout the season. Overall, the eight franchises have 64 foreign players, while the remaining 14 are in Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants.
When it comes to retaining foreign players, Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals lead the way with 7 foreign players each. Right behind them are Royal Challengers Bangalore, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Punjab Kings, who retained 6-6 foreign players.
Among other franchises, Chennai Super Kings, Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants retained 4 players each, Delhi Capitals retained three, while Kolkata Knight Riders retained two players.
