IPL 2026: SRH’s replacement pacer ruled out with ankle injury

New Delhi: England pacer David Payne, who was signed as an injury replacement by Sunrisers Hyderabad, ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, has been ruled out of the remainder of the tournament due to an ankle injury.

The English left-arm seamer was signed in place of injured Jack Edwards and featured in the first two matches, picking up two wickets, including a decent outing against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the opening match of the season.

“David Payne has been ruled out of TATA IPL 2026 after sustaining an ankle injury,” SRH said in a post on X.

“Wishing him a speedy recovery.”

Payne’s IPL stint cut short by injury

Payne, 35, was brought in by the Orange Army for Rs 1.5 crore after a strong performance in the Big Bash League (BBL).

Payne’s injury-forced departure is yet another blow for the 2016 champions, who have been hit hard by injuries in IPL 2026. Payne’s English compatriot, Brydon Carse, was earlier ruled out with a hand injury sustained at the beginning of the campaign. Sri Lankan pacer Dilshan Madushanka was signed as his replacement.

Cummins’ return to boost injury-ravaged SRH

Regular skipper Pat Cummins is yet to take the field this season due to a stress injury. However, the Australian fast bowler has achieved full fitness after recovering from the injury and is expected to return to action later this month. As per multiple reports, Cummins has passed all fitness tests and is set to join the squad soon.

Cummins is expected to play against the Rajasthan Royals on April 25. The Sunrisers, under the leadership of stand-in captain Ishan Kishan, currently sit fourth on the table with two wins and three losses.
