The Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) endured another disappointing season in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, finishing sixth on the points table with only six wins from 14 matches.
Despite flashes of brilliance, the team struggled for consistency throughout the campaign. One of the major letdowns for SRH was the performance of Mohammed Shami, who failed to make a significant impact with the ball.
The Indian pacer managed to pick up just six wickets in nine matches, a below-par return considering his high standards. With age and fitness concerns also playing a role, SRH might need to rethink his retention ahead of the IPL 2026 auction. Here are three players SRH could target to replace Shami in their pace attack.
Here are 3 replacements options for Mohammed Shami in SRH ahead of IPL 2026 auctions
Matt Henry (New Zealand)
New Zealand’s experienced pacer Matt Henry could be a valuable addition to SRH’s bowling lineup. Henry has played 28 T20Is, claiming 39 wickets at an economy rate of 8.29, which is respectable in the modern era of power-hitting. In the IPL, Henry has represented Punjab Kings (PBKS) in 2017 and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in 2024, though he featured in only six matches across both seasons.
His international workload and injuries have limited his IPL appearances, but when fit, Henry is a dependable strike bowler with the ability to bowl crucial overs both in the powerplay and at the death. Partnering with Pat Cummins, Henry’s control could provide SRH with the stability they lacked in 2025.
Chetan Sakariya (India)
SRH could also turn to the left-arm pacer Chetan Sakariya known for his swing and variations. Sakariya has played two T20Is for India and featured in 47 domestic T20s, taking 65 wickets. In the IPL, he has appeared in 20 matches, bagging 20 wickets while playing for multiple franchises.
His ability to move the ball early and deliver key breakthroughs makes him a handy addition, especially on Indian pitches. Moreover, his left-arm angle brings variety to SRH’s predominantly right-arm pace attack. With guidance from senior bowlers, Sakariya can develop into a reliable performer for the franchise.
William O’Rourke (New Zealand)
William O’Rourke is another New Zealand fast bowler who could fit into SRH’s plans. The tall right-arm pacer has represented the Kiwis in seven T20Is and a 17 ODIs. He was roped in as a temporary replacement by LSG during IPL 2025, where he played three matches.
Though relatively inexperienced, O’Rourke has shown promise with his pace and bounce. His exposure to different playing conditions globally has helped him evolve as a bowler. With age on his side, he can be groomed into a long-term asset for SRH.
