IPL 2026: Shreyas Iyer gets double punishment, ‘Player of the Match’ also fined

Punjab Kings (PBKS) may have missed the title by reaching the finals in the last IPL season, but in IPL 2026, the team is again making a strong bid. The team captained by Shreyas Iyer has made a strong start in the new season by winning two consecutive matches. After defeating Gujarat Titans in the first match, Punjab defeated Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in their own home match in the next match. But along with two consecutive wins, Punjab captain Iyer also got punishment from BCCI in both the matches. After the win against Chennai, Iyer was fined a heavy fine of Rs 24 lakh for slow over rate.

Iyer lost Rs 36 lakh in 2 matches

In the 7th match of IPL 2026 played on Friday, April 3 in Chennai, CSK, batting first, had set a target of 210 runs for Punjab to win. Punjab achieved this target in the 19th over itself and continued its success with its second consecutive win. But with the victory, Punjab got trapped in the trap of slow over rate for the second consecutive match and this time not only the captain but also the entire team had to bear the brunt of it.

After the end of the match, in the press release issued by IPL, it was told that a total fine of Rs 24 lakh has been imposed on Iyer. He has been fined for violating Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which is related to slow over rate. This was Iyer’s second consecutive violation this season, so he was fined double. Earlier, due to slow over rate in the match against Gujarat, he had to pay a fine of Rs 12 lakh. That means they suffered a loss of Rs 36 lakh in the first 2 matches of the new season.

Fine on other players including Priyansh

Not only Iyer, but this time the entire Punjab team was also fined, including player of the match Priyansh Arya. Priyansh played a big role in helping the team win with his explosive innings but could not avoid losing some part of his earnings. According to the rules, in the first match only the captain is fined, but if the same mistake is made for the second time, apart from the captain, the playing-12 (including the impact player) is also fined. Therefore, except Iyer, the remaining 11 players of Punjab including Priyansh Arya have been fined Rs 6 lakh or 25 percent of the match fee (whichever is less).
