IPL 2026: Shreyas Iyer fined heavily for 2nd over-rate offence. Will PBKS skipper face ban?

New Delhi: Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain Shreyas Iyer has been fined Rs 24 lakh for his team’s slow over-rate during their clash against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 on Friday, April 03. Punjab Kings defeated CSK by five wickets to bag their second win in a row, but the outing proved costly for the entire team.

The slow over-rate offence against CSK was Punjab Kings’ second of the season after they were found guilty of maintaining a slow over-rate in their season opener against the Gujarat Titans last week. All Punjab Kings players who were part of the playing XI, including Impact Sub Priyansh Arya, were affected because it was the team’s second offence this season.

Under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, Iyer was fined Rs 24 lakh as captain, while all other PBKS players who featured in the match were fined Rs 6 lakh or 25% of their match fee, whichever is lesser. Punjab Kings produced a dominant display with the bat to successfully chase down the target of 210 runs with eight balls to spare and hand CSK their second defeat of the trot in IPL 2026.

Will Shreyas Iyer face a ban?

No. Punjab Kings captain Iyer will not face suspension in IPL 2026 after his team’s second over-rate offence this season. Earlier, there was a provision for suspension for a captain after three slow over-rate offences by his team in an IPL season. However, Iyer will not be banned even if PBKS commit another slow over-rate offence in their coming matches due to a change in the rules.

IPL has scrapped the rule to hand a one-match ban to captains after three slow over-rate offences in a season. The captain and the players of the side will now face fines and field restrictions during the game. However, every offence will see demerit points being added to a player’s record. Accumulation of such demerit points can result in suspension in the future.

IPL has aligned with the ICC to introduce the demerit points system, removing the threat of immediate suspension for a captain for his team’s slow over-rate offences, which was deemed severe. Now every sanction from the match referee will result in the captain being handed demerit points, which might result in a suspension in future.
