The 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has already witnessed some nail-biting finishes. The interest around this season was already high as it kick-started a new cycle after the mega-auction last year.
Like every season, IPL 2025 has unearthed some exciting talents. The likes of Digvesh Rathi and Vipraj Nigam have shown that India’s new generation of leg-spinners pack a punch.
Krunal Pandya and Sai Kishore’s performances have proven that there is still a lot of value that finger spinners can add in the shortest format of the game. While veterans like Sunil Narine and Rashid Khan have not been among the wickets, young Noor Ahmad leads the Purple Cap list with 11 scalps from five games.
Spinners have continued to play crucial roles for their teams in IPL 2025. CricTracker takes a look at how much each team spent on spinners in IPL 2025.
10. Mumbai Indians – 4.80 crore
Five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) spent the least amount of money on their spinners. Vignesh Puthur has been one of the finds of this season for MI. The left-arm wrist spinner was roped in for his base price of INR 30 lakh in the mega-auction. Karn Sharma also joined at his base price of INR 50 lakh. Meanwhile, Mitchell Santner signed for INR 2 crore. Mumbai had acquired the services of young Afghanistan spinner AM Ghazanfar. However, he was ruled out due to injury and replaced by Mujeeb Ur Rahman for INR 2 crore.
9. Sunrisers Hyderabad – 6 crore
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) are known for their attacking brand of cricket. Their home ground – Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium provides pitches which have very little assistance for bowlers. Spinners find it even more difficult to contain batters at this ground. It isn’t a surprise that Hyderabad spent just INR 6 crore on their spin-bowling department in IPL 2025. The Orange Army have only three specialist spinners in their lineup – Rahul Chahar (INR 3.20 crore), Adam Zampa (INR 2.40 crore), and Zeeshan Ansari (INR 40 lakh).
8. Royal Challengers Bengaluru – 8.65 crore
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) play their home games at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, which is also known for being a batting paradise. However, this season, there has been more help for the bowlers. All-rounder Krunal Pandya was roped in by the franchise for INR 5.75 crore at the auction. He is leading the spin-bowling department with Suyash Sharma (INR 2.60 crore) for the company. Mohit Rathee is the other spinner in the squad. Liam Livingstone has also chipped in with some overs this season, but he hasn’t been included in the calculation.
7. Rajasthan Royals – 9.95 crore
Rajasthan Royals (RR) did well to bag the services of Sri Lankan spin twins Wanindu Hasaranga (INR 5.25 crore) and Maheesh Theekshana (INR 4.40 crore) in the IPL 2025 mega-auction. The other specialist spinner in their squad is Kumar Kartikeya, who was roped in at his base price of INR 30 lakh. Theekshana and Hasaranga have picked up six wickets each from five and three matches, respectively. Meanwhile, Kartikeya has only played two games, bagging one wicket at an average of 31.
6. Delhi Capitals – 13.75 crore
Delhi Capitals (DC) spent INR 13.75 crore to bring in the spin-bowling duo of Kuldeep Yadav (INR 13.25 crore), Vipraj Nigam (INR 50 lakh). All-rounder Axar Patel, who was appointed as the captain of the franchise ahead of the season, was retained for INR 16.50 crore. However, he hasn’t been taken into consideration while evaluating the money spent on spinners by DC. While Kuldeep has fared well, Nigam has been the surprise package, as his leg-spin bowling has bamboozled some top-class batters.
5. Lucknow Super Giants – 14.45 crore
Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) know the importance of spinners very well as their home ground – Ekana Cricket Stadium – provides a lot of help for them. They retained Ravi Bishnoi for INR 11 crore ahead of the auction. They went on to add Manimaran Siddharth (INR 75 lakh) and Digvesh Rathi (INR 30 lakh) in their lineup. Shahbaz Ahmed also joined the lineup for INR 2.30 crore. Rathi has been the surprise package for the Lucknow-based franchise, as he has picked up seven wickets from five games at an average of 22.14.
4. Punjab Kings – 19.80 crore
Punjab Kings (PBKS) broke the bank for Yuzvendra Chahal at the mega-auction, acquiring the services of the leading wicket-taker in IPL history for INR 18 crore. Harpreet Brar extended his stay at PBKS, getting picked in the auction for INR 1.50 crore. Leg-spinner Praveen Dubey was also roped in for INR 30 lakh. Brar and Dubey are yet to get a game in IPL 2025. Meanwhile, Chahal has not been able to set the stage ablaze as yet.
3. Chennai Super Kings – 20.50 crore
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) play their home matches at Chepauk, which is traditionally known for favouring the spinners. In recent years, though, the surfaces have been much better for batting. However, this didn’t stop the five-time champions from spending big for the tweakers. With all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja already in the lineup, CSK brought back Ravichandran Ashwin (INR 9.75 crore) to the camp after nine years and signed Noor Ahmad (INR 10 crore). Shreyas Gopal (INR 30 lakh) is also in the squad as a backup and can be used when required.
2. Gujarat Titans – 20.30 crore
Gujarat Titans (GT) have a lot of spinners in their ranks. Rashid was retained for a whopping INR 18 crore ahead of the auction, while captain Shubman Gill got an INR 16.50 crore contract. Meanwhile, young Manav Suthar was signed at his base price of INR 30 lakh. However, R Sai Kishore, who was picked for INR 2 crore at the auction, has been the best spinner for the Titans by a distance. All-rounders Washington Sundar and Rahul Tewatia have not been used with the ball, and their salaries have not been taken into account.
1. Kolkata Knight Riders – 24.30 crore
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are the only franchise that retained two spinners – Varun Chakaravarthy and Sunil Narine – ahead of the auction. Both players received INR 12 crore contracts. They could not sign Suyash Sharma, who was with the franchise in IPL 2023 and 2024. The defending champions, however, picked up another leg-spinner, Mayank Markande, for his base price of INR 30 lakh. KKR’s strength lies in their spinners, and that is why they have been wanting tracks that would provide more assistance for Narine and Co.
