IPL 2025: Dasun Shanaka replaces injured Glenn Phillips at Gujarat Titans

New Delhi: Gujarat Titans (GT) have roped in Sri Lanka all-rounder Dasun Shanaka as a replacement for injured Glenn Phillips for the remaining part of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Interestingly, Shanaka has featured for GT in the past, in the 2023 season, when the team ended up as runners-up.

He comes in at his base price of Rs. 75 lakh.

New Zealand’s Phillips had sustained a groin injury while fielding against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Hyderabad only over ten days back and was later ruled out of the cash-rich league to tend to his injury back home. He was a base price pick at Rs. 2 crore for the Titans, but did not feature in a single game before. He only acted as an impact substitute in the SRH game, which turned out to be his last of the ongoing season.

As far as Shanaka is concerned, he has only played one season of the IPL so far, where he played three games for GT, scoring just 26 runs and didn’t get to bowl at all. For Sri Lanka, he has played 102 T20Is thus far. Previously, GT also lost the services of Kagiso Rabada, on April 3, when he left for home citing “an important personal matter.” There’s still no clarity over his return to India, and the franchise has refrained from naming a replacement for the Proteas pacer.

GT’s IPL 2025 campaign

With nearly half of the league stage games over, GT ranks second on the points table with four wins out of their six games so far. Their next game is against table-toppers Delhi Capitals (DC) on Saturday, their first afternoon match at home. The franchise shared a video on its social media platforms where the players addressed the GT fans, informing them about the first afternoon home game and the facilities that will be available to cater to the large crowd.

India is going through peak summer time, and the IPL afternoon games make it difficult for the fans to witness the live action from the stadium stands, which fall under direct sunlight. To beat the excessive heat, the franchise said they will have water stations across different stands of the ground along with sunscreen, sun visors, ORS, and proper medical teams as well, to deal with sun or heatstroke issues, if any.
