Former India head coach, Ravi Shastri was impressed with Shubman Gill’s captaincy for Gujarat against Hyderabad on Sunday, 30 March. Playing at the Narendra Modi Stadium, against Hyderabad, Gujarat made a brilliant effort to restrict the opposition to 162 runs after the team had scored 2 consecutive 200-plus totals.
Just a few days after registering the highest total in IPL’s history (277 runs), Hyderabad failed to get the ground running and were restricted to just 162 runs vs Gill’s side.
Gill, leading only in his third match for GT, showed great confidence and led the team from the front. From fielding to bowling changed, the youngest captain of the season was spot on at the field. He was all charged up as he celebrated SRH’s fall of wickets with the GT bowlers. Shastri hailed Gill for having taken the field with a plan in mind.
“One aspect I want to touch on is Shubman Gill. He was calm. I thought he captained the side very well. He’s new to the job, but, you know, he’s adjusting extremely well, because he didn’t waste time with his feet placings. He had a plan in his mind from the outset and which was good to see,” Shastri said on the mid-innings show of Star Sports.

HOW GT BOWLERS BOWLED vs SRH?
SRH were at 58 for 1 at the powerplay, with Travis Head going strong. But the GT bowlers kept chipping-in with wickets at the crucial stage of the match. Head fell to Noor Ahmad, while trying to attack him in the 7th over of the game. Mohit Sharma chipped in with Abhishek Sharma’s wicket, just when the batter was looking to go big after getting settled. Rashid Khan kept SRH’s star, Heinrich Klaasen, quiet by dismissing him for 24 runs.
On a two-paced track, the ball came nicely onto the bat with the new ball. Shastri also talked about the different conditions, in which, the SRH batters played. As the ball became softer, the stroke-play became only tougher and tougher. However, a late cameo from Abdul Samad with 29 runs from 14 balls guided SRH to a decent total.
Shastri also talked about the different conditions in which the SRH batters played and praised the GT bowlers for their brilliant use of the slow pitch.
“I am not surprised, because one thing, when you travel from one city to another, the conditions can differ. As a player, you have got to adapt. This pitch was a lot slower. Once the ball got a little older, it wasn’t quite coming onto the bat. Where GT did really well was after the power play. The spinners came into the game picking wickets at regular intervals. Mohit Sharma came back at the back of the innings. He did his job as well. You know, it was a very useful contribution from all the bowlers. The fielding was good,” Shastri said.
Mohit Sharma was the pick among the Gujarat bowlers as he ended with the figures of 3 wickets for 25 runs in 4 overs.
