Apple hosted its Surprise and shine event last week, where it unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Alongside the new Pro models, Apple also introduced its long-rumoured foldable smartphone called iPhone Duo.
Even though the Duo is priced at 2,99,900, it is missing two key features: Face ID and telephoto lens. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, these could be among Apple’s biggest priorities for future versions of the foldable.
The thin design makes it difficult to fit the hardware needed for advanced facial recognition and a dedicated zoom camera. Gurman expects Apple to address both issues by the third generation of the iPhone Duo. However, he does not think Apple will solve the problem through hardware changes alone.
“Both are difficult to squeeze into such a thin device because the necessary components require significant depth – it’s fundamentally a physics problem,” Gurman said in the report.
Apple could eventually tackle this by making the required components smaller. Advances in camera technology and other hardware could help the company reduce the space needed for these systems. Gurman also expects AI to play an important role as well.
Gurman believes the third-generation iPhone Duo is when the company could finally bring both Face ID and a telephoto camera to the foldable.
Meanwhile, Gurman also reports that the iPhone-maker is working on two game controllers for iPhones. The controllers are expected to launch under Apple’s Beats branding. The product engineering and conception are reportedly being led by Beats executives. “The culture and lifestyle around gaming controllers also could fit naturally under the Beats umbrella,” he said.
