Nepal joins interactive big cat alliance: The International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA), launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2023, is now rapidly joining the world’s largest environmental protection missions. With Nepal becoming officially members, now 90 countries have joined this organization. This global alliance is working to bring countries on a platform for the conservation of seven major species of big cats – tigers, lions, leopards, snow leopards, cheetahs, jaguar and puma. Nepal’s membership will give more strength to this effort.
Why did PM Modi take this global initiative?
Prime Minister Modi’s vision is based on “Shared Ecological Security”, which includes conservation of environment and wildlife world-level priority. This initiative of India is not only an attempt to preserve biodiversity, but it is also a major step towards connecting countries through wildlife diplomacy.

Importance of Nepal’s entry
Nepal is already home to rare species like snow leopard, normal leopard and tiger. While the number of tigers in Nepal in 2009 was only 121, in 2022 the figure reached 355. This shows that Nepal’s conservation efforts are being appreciated globally. Nepal’s joining will further strengthen projects like Tiger Conservation and Snow Leopard Protection in the Asian region.
Which countries have joined IBCA?
This initiative of India has brought 90 countries of the world on one platform, which are cooperating to protect and prevent hunting of big cats. This includes many countries in South America, Africa, Asia and Europe.
Which species focuses IBCA?
IBCA promises to conserve seven big cat species:

- Leopard
- Snow leopard
- Cheetah (cheetah)
- Jaguar
- Puma (puma)
Environmental diplomacy
