But the American Army carried out a very courageous operation and rescued its pilot safely from enemy soil. This pilot was none other than a senior colonel rank officer.
Just before the plane crashed, the pilot ejected himself and landed on Iranian soil with the help of a parachute. He had only a pistol, a little food, a locator beacon and a device for secure communication. Using his training, the pilot first distanced himself from the crash site, knowing that was where the enemy would arrive first. After this he hid in a crevice in the nearby hills.
In an attempt to save his life, he climbed a mountain about 7000 feet high. According to media reports, it was easy to hide at this height, but it made the rescue operation extremely difficult. This difficult area was both a shield and a challenge for him at the same time. While the pilot was struggling to save his life, several security forces, including Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), were searching for him extensively. Officials also asked the general public to help find the pilot.
Sensing the danger, the American pilot used his locator beacon sparingly, because its signal could be tracked by the enemy. Instead, he resorted to encrypted communication systems to contact the US Army. Due to this, the American Army was able to track his location without informing anyone. This incident shows how effective the Army’s SERE (Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape) training is.
According to reports, while the pilot was hiding, American intelligence agencies made a plan to mislead the Iranian army. They spread a rumor that the missing pilot had been found and had been shifted to some other place. This trick worked. The Iranian military got distracted from the real location, which gave the US military precious time to plan a rescue mission. Meanwhile, American planes also attacked an Iranian convoy approaching the pilot’s hideout.
As soon as the exact location of the pilot was found, a major rescue mission was started. This included a large team of special commandos and fighter planes. Reports suggest that elite units like Navy SEAL Team Six were also involved in this mission. The then US President Donald Trump described it as one of the most courageous rescue operations in American history.
During the mission, US forces had to attack to repel Iranian troops. Iranian media also reported the death of its soldiers in this operation. Eventually, the pilot was safely evacuated from Iran. American officials said that the pilot was injured while ejecting and trying to escape, but he is now recovering.
