Injuries Challenge UConn’s Solo Ball and Michigan’s Yaxel Lendeborg Ahead of Championship Game

UConn starting guard Solo Ball is coping with a sprained left foot, while Michigan forward Yaxel Lendeborg is dealing with injuries to his left ankle and knee as they prepare for the national championship game on Monday night.

With the teams set to face off, both players’ health remains a critical concern, prompting coaches and teammates to express optimism about their participation despite the injuries.

Injury Updates and Team Responses

Neither player was anticipated to practice on Sunday, focusing instead on treatment to enhance their chances of playing in the championship. Coaches Dan Hurley of UConn and Dusty May of Michigan attempted to maintain a light atmosphere leading up to the game.

“I’m sure he’ll give it a go tomorrow, but that will be entirely up to him and the medical staff,” May remarked about Lendeborg, a first-team All-American. He added humorously, “He played the second half like a 38-year-old at the YMCA – a really good 38-year-old at the YMCA.”

Lendeborg’s Performance and Outlook

Lendeborg’s injury occurred during Michigan’s 91-73 victory over Arizona, limiting him to just five minutes in the first half. Despite the injury, he managed to contribute 11 points and three rebounds in 15 minutes of play, including two 3-pointers.

When asked about the possibility of missing the championship game, Lendeborg firmly stated, “Absolutely not.” He had previously injured his ankle during the Big Ten Tournament, and although he sustained a new knee injury, MRI results returned clean.

Ball’s Situation and UConn’s Expectations

Ball’s injury came as a surprise, with Hurley expressing concern upon seeing him in a walking boot. He has been pivotal for UConn, averaging 12.9 points this season and starting all 38 games.

During UConn’s 91-72 victory over Illinois, Ball scored 10 of his 13 points in the second half despite his injury. He described his experience, saying, “It’s just a bump in the road, so you’ve got to keep moving forward. Pain is temporary.”

Championship Aspirations Amid Injuries

As UConn aims for its third national championship in four years, Hurley expressed hope that Ball would be able to participate. He noted the logistical challenges of obtaining an MRI on Easter Sunday, underscoring the urgency of the situation.

Meanwhile, Michigan remains resolute, with players indicating that Lendeborg’s injury will not alter their game plan. “I’ll still play the four outs,” stated Michigan forward Morez Johnson Jr. “And Yax is fine.”
