IndiGo to Increase Fuel Surcharge Up to ₹2,300 From March 14 as ATF Prices Rise

Travellers flying with IndiGo may notice slightly higher ticket prices from March 14, 2026.

India’s largest airline has announced a fuel surcharge on both domestic and international flights after aviation fuel prices surged sharply in recent weeks. The increase is linked to ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which have pushed up global jet fuel costs.

IndiGo Fuel Surcharge: How Much Will Passengers Pay

According to the airline, the additional fee will depend on the route and distance of the flight. Passengers can expect a surcharge ranging from:

  • ₹425 on shorter routes
  • Up to ₹2,300 on longer routes

The airline confirmed that the charge will apply to all tickets issued from March 14 onwards, covering both domestic and international travel.

Why Airlines Are Adding a Fuel Charge

Airlines rely heavily on Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF), which is one of the highest operating costs for any airline.

Recent tensions in the Middle East have pushed fuel prices higher across global markets. Industry data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) shows that jet fuel prices in the region have jumped by more than 85 per cent.

For airlines, this creates a sudden spike in operating costs. Introducing a temporary fuel surcharge is one way to offset part of that increase without immediately raising base ticket fares.

Air India Group Also Introduced a Fuel Surcharge

The move by IndiGo follows similar steps taken earlier this week by the Air India group, including Air India Express. The airline group introduced its own new fuel surcharge on March 12, 2026.

Here’s how those charges apply:

Domestic Flights

  • ₹399 per ticket across domestic routes
  • The same surcharge also applies to flights within the South Asian region
Region New Fuel Surcharge
Domestic India INR 399
SAARC countries INR 399
West Asia / Middle East USD 10

International Flights

Fuel surcharges vary depending on the destination:

Region Previous Surcharge Increase New Surcharge
Southeast Asia USD 40 USD 20 USD 60
Africa USD 60 USD 30 USD 90

Airlines say these charges may be introduced in phases across routes as fuel costs continue to fluctuate.

What Exactly Is a Fuel Surcharge?

A fuel surcharge is an additional fee airlines add to ticket prices when aviation fuel becomes significantly more expensive. Instead of permanently increasing base fares, airlines temporarily add this extra charge to help cover rising fuel costs.

Fuel prices can change quickly due to global events such as conflicts, supply disruptions, or oil market volatility. When prices stabilise, airlines sometimes reduce or remove the surcharge.

What Travellers Should Expect

For passengers, the new surcharge means slightly higher ticket prices in the short term.

However, airlines say the measure is necessary to manage rising fuel costs while maintaining flight operations. If global fuel prices stabilise, these charges may be revised in the future.

For now, travellers booking flights from mid-March should expect to see a small additional fuel fee included in the final ticket price.
