What is the story?
According to a story associated with this temple, a Banjara lived here with his dog many years ago. Once there was a famine, Banjare had to leave his house and he mortgaged his dog to a moneylender. One night the moneylender’s house was stolen and the thieves ran away with all the goods. The dog chased the thieves and discovered the place where they hid the goods. The dog brought the moneylender to that place and the moneylender got all his goods back. Happy with the dog’s loyalty, the moneylender freed him.
Here, Banjare felt that his dog had left him and ran away and killed the dog in anger. Later, when he came to know the whole story, he regretted a lot. To atone for his mistake, he built a temple in memory of his loyal dog. Today this temple is not only a symbol of loyalty, but also shows that humans also have the power to accept their mistake.

Bhairav Baba Temple, Greater Noida
A special statue of a dog is installed in the temple of Bhairav Baba located in Chipiana elderly village of Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh. It is believed that the dog is the vehicle of Bhairav Baba and a true servant. Devotees here offer flowers and garlands to Bhairav Baba as well as a dog’s statue. People believe that worshiping in this temple removes negative energy and there is security and prosperity in life.
What is recognition?
It is believed that Bhairav Baba himself comes riding on a black dog. Therefore, before seeing Bhairav Baba, devotees worship the idol of this dog. People here believe that Bhairav Baba is pleased by worshiping the dog and fulfills all his wishes. This temple shows how faith and mythology together give rise to a unique tradition.
Dog temple, Karnataka
There is also a temple in Chinnapatna village of Ramnagar district of Karnataka where dogs are worshiped. This temple is slightly different from the rest of the temples, because here all the dogs are worshiped, not a particular dog.
