New Delhi: India’s tour of Bangladesh to be held in August is set to get postponed to 2026, it has been announced. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is wary of the current situation in the country which is facing turmoil and a lot of unrest since the toppling of the Sheikh Hasina’s government last year.
Keeping the social-political conditions in Bangladesh in mind, the Indian cricket board does not want to take chances with respect to the security and safety of the Indian cricket players hence they are pondering over postponing the tournament. Since the ODI Championship points are linked to the series, it cannot be postponed but can be pushed for a later date next year.
India were supposed to play three ODIs and as many T20Is in Dhaka and Chittagong from August 17 to August 31 ahead of the Asia Cup 2025, which will be held in India and the UAE in September. As far as Asia Cup is concerned, the muti-nations event will duly tale place on time with the game between arch-rivals India and Pakistan headlining the tournament.
BCCI wary of the Bangladesh situation
‘Apparently BCCI is wary about the security situation in Bangladesh post the civil unrest,’ a BCCI source told news agency PTI.
It is also being learnt that the reason for postponing the tour to 2026 is that the country will have a stable government then as general elections are expected to be held early next year. The Indian cricket board is planning to go for the tour only after a proper government is formed with good law and order situation which ensures safety for the players.
Bangladesh is currently governed by an interim government led by Muhammad Yunus.
