The impact of the ongoing tariff dispute between India and America is now visible on the postal services of common people. The Indian Postal Department has suspended all the postal services going to America. This means that now no letter, documents, parcels or gifts of up to $ 100 can be sent to America. The notice issued by the government states that this step has to be taken due to the new rules imposed by the US administration and the inability of the Indian postal carriers.
What is the matter?
In fact, this decision has been taken after an order number 14324 issued by the US on 30 July 2025. According to this order, now there will be no tax or discount on goods up to $ 800 in America. That is, a new tax rule has come into force on every parcel that reached America from August 29. Because of this, the Indian Postal Department has stopped all American postal services by taking precautions. It is clearly written in the notice that booking and sending posts sent to America will remain closed until the entire system related to the custom tax and data exchange is fully implemented.
The US also gave another order on 30 July 2025, which said that it would be necessary to pay custom tax on goods worth more than $ 100. Under this rule, companies or agencies that will charge custom tax are required to get approval from the US Customs Department. Some guidelines were issued on August 15, but many important things were not clear yet, such as which companies will collect these taxes and what will be the way to collect tax.
For this reason, flights and courier companies going to America stopped taking Indian postal goods since August 25. At that time it was said that up to $ 100 gift items and letters or documents will be sent as before, but now they have also been closed.
Common people will affect
This decision is a matter of concern, especially for those Indians who used to send necessary documents, gifts or parcels to the families and friends living in America. Now they will not be able to rely on traditional postal services and will have to turn to alternative courier companies. The Department of Posts has also clarified that those who have already booked the postal book going to America, but now they will not be able to be sent, they can claim the postal fee.
When will services start again?
The government has also said that the situation is constantly being monitored and efforts will be made to restore postal services as soon as possible. However, it will have to wait until the US Customs and Border Security Department (CBP) does not implement the process of sharing data and charging the fee. Experts believe that this decision has been taken due to increasing trade tension between Indo-US and there is little hope of normal operation of postal services without consenting on customs and data exchange between the two countries.
